It's still expensive to run a truck in the UK

The UK remains one of the most expensive places in Europe to run a 40-tonne truck, according to research by Nera Economic Consulting and the Freight Transport Association. Operating costs including staffing, fuel, VED and insurance were taken into account.
Taking the UK's costs as an indexed figure of 100, only the Netherlands has a higher figure - 101. Italy with 98 and Germany with 97 have similar running costs, while Ireland with 93, Poland with 77 and Hungary with 76 show the huge variation across Europe.
In June 2006, when Nera last looked at the costs of running a truck in Europe, the Netherlands and Ireland had a figure of 98 but Italy scored only 88 compared with the UK's 100.
The survey also considered employment costs alone, and again the UK was given an index of 100. Germany is the most expensive with 131, followed by the Netherlands with 132 and Italy with 106. Hungary and the Czech Republic are the cheapest with 39, followed by Poland with 54.
The FTA plans to take the information to the government to show how the high price of fuel among other costs is making UK hauliers less competitive than their Continental counterparts.
Comment: Taking the overall figures into consideration it appears that Western European countries have similar costs.
It's when you look at the wages figure the uneven palying field comes into view.
Germany and Holland are 31 /32 points higher than the UK on Employment costs: yet come out 3 points lower than the UK overall. This obviously means that other UK specific costs must be higher than our neighbours and the main specific cost is TAXATION!!!
Eastern Europe at 60 points lower on employment costs says it all. _________________ Squarepeg ([])
