#1 Post by The Hospitaliter » Sat May 15, 2021 12:59 am

Hi there
Anyone know of any legal way possible to tow a 9 feet wide porter cabin with a 3.5T van?
Thanks

Morning Hospitaliter, and welcome to the PDF.

Its less the width of the thing to be towed, more the weight which is going to be your problem.

Different vans have differing towing capacities, so he first question is does your van have capacity for the weight of the porta cabin you want to tow?

If it does, its almost certain to take the combination weight over 3.5t, so your van would need to have a tacho fitted.

All you need then is a driver with B&E categories on their licence. For people with licences issued after January 1997. that will probably mean taking another test to get the trailer category added.

So its theoretically possible, but in practice it becomes complicated quite quickly. An easier option would be to talk to local recovery and transport companies, who should be able to get it moved for you.

Yes I have calculated weight on no problem for the lighter porter blocks, since its being towered by a 3.5T transit van
But messurements a problem https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car/weig ... dth-limits

Looks like you've answered your own question.

The legal max is just over 8 feet, so your 9 footer would need to be moved some other way.

Your best bet would be to contact DVSA and the vehicle manufacturer to see if its possible and what would be required.
